Cal State East Bay

tuuštak Ecocultural Garden
čupkan · Concord

We restore and steward 100 acres of oak woodland, highland chaparral, and the Galindo Creek riparian corridor, at the base of tuuštak, our most sacred mountain, known today as Mt. Diablo.

The Partnership

In this beautiful place, mak-warép Ohlone Land Conservancy works alongside Cal State East Bay Concord and our dear friends at Terremoto Landscape. Together we restore a landscape that teaches the abundance of the East Bay, actively repairing land once grazed by cattle, for the benefit of everyone who lives here now.

Fire, Renewed

Here, we have implemented two cultural burns through 2026, the first one of which was the first burn in at least two generations, with seasonal burns to come every year. Each burn is paired with ongoing soil monitoring and work that eases the overgrowth that leads to wildfire and encourages the plants that belong here to keep coming back.

“It's a way of giving back to the land."

— Auntie Dottie, 95, at tuuštak for the first renewed burn in generations
